With early diagnosis and treatment, most pets recover just fine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, the team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allcrittersvet.com\/\">All Critters Veterinary Hospital<\/a> shares information about some of the most common respiratory infections in pets, and what to do about them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kennel Cough&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennel cough outbreaks are common in the fall\u2014far more than most pet parents realize. Indoor training sessions, seasonal boarding stays, and cooler temperatures can all contribute to the spread of this pesky illness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/resources-tools\/pet-owners\/petcare\/canine-infectious-respiratory-disease-complex-kennel-cough\">Canine Infections Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC)<\/a>, kennel cough is caused by an array of bacteria viruses, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bordetella bronchiseptica<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canine parainfluenza<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adenovirus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canine influenza (H3N2 and H3N8)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dog cough symptoms usually include the following:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Harsh cough, sometimes with retching or gagging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sneezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nasal and\/or eye discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mild lethargy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lowered appetite<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For kennel cough, the incubation period can be anywhere from 3 to 10 days. Mild cases usually resolve themselves in about a week to 10 days, but serious cases or those that develop into pneumonia can last a lot longer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect your pup has kennel cough, quarantine her from your other pets and call your vet. Most pups just need plenty of rest and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allcrittersvet.com\/blog\/pet-hydration-hacks-creative-ways-to-keep-your-dog-or-cat-drinking-water\/\">hydration<\/a>, but some may need antibiotics or cough suppressants. In felines, upper respiratory infections are often caused by feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) or calicivirus. But bacteria like Bordetella bronchiseptica and Chlamydophila felis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/departments-centers-and-institutes\/cornell-feline-health-center\/health-information\/feline-health-topics\/respiratory-infections\">can also play a role<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of upper respiratory infections in cats include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allcrittersvet.com\/blog\/the-case-of-the-springtime-sneezes-is-it-a-cold-allergy-or-something-more\/\">Sneezing<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stuffy or runny nose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eye discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mouth ulcers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lethargy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of appetite<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For cats, many upper respiratory infections incubate for 2-10 days, with symptoms lasting anywhere from 7 to 21 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaccination can help reduce the severity of these infections, but they don\u2019t guarantee full prevention.
